PINETOP, Ariz. — The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking information about the recent poaching of a cow elk that was found near Clifton.

The animal likely had been killed Wednesday or Thursday (Feb. 8-9). It had been shot and field-dressed, then likely moved and left to waste in an area between Three Way and Clifton. Game and Fish officials are trying to determine the location where the elk was shot before it was moved to the Clifton area.

“The poacher left this animal to waste, and we need assistance from the public to find the individual(s) responsible,” said Steve Najar, wildlife manager. “This act shows both a disregard for hunting laws and regulations, and a lack of respect for the wildlife resources of Arizona.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the department’s Operation Game Thief hotline at (800) 352-0700, or visit www.azgfd.gov/thief, and refer to case #17-000349. Callers may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000 in this case. Callers can remain anonymous upon request.
