PINETOP, Ariz — The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is partnering with the White Mountain Nature Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4 for a presentation by Allen Zufelt on California condors. Zufelt is the California Condor Program Coordinator for AZGFD.

Learn about the natural history of the California condors, which are the largest flying land birds in North America. They are New World vultures and are opportunistic scavengers that feed primarily on large dead mammals such as deer, elk, bighorn sheep, range cattle, and horses. Condors have a wingspan of 9 ½ feet and can weigh up to 25 pounds as adults. Using thermal updrafts, condors can soar and glide up to 50 miles per hour and travel 100 miles or more per day in search of food.

The presentation will include information about what AZGFD is doing to reach the goal of downlisting the birds from endangered to threatened and for the population to be self-sustaining. The free program is open to the public.

The White Mountain Nature Center is located at 425 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ 85929.
