PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department has announced the winners of its annual wildlife photo contest.

This year’s contest attracted outstanding entries from across Arizona and beyond. The 13 winning works of art, which celebrate the diversity of Arizona wildlife, are being published in the 2010 Arizona Wildlife Calendar.

Ted Hendy of Sierra Vista, Ariz., claimed top honors with his photograph of a long-nosed leopard lizard. Hendy’s image of a wild turkey was one of the 12 monthly winners. The other 11 winning photographers are:

  • Ann Beisser, Scottsdale: javelina
  • Bob McBride, Scottsdale: Northern cardinal
  • Bruce Taubert, Glendale: regal horned lizard
  • Bryan Hughes, Anthem: Western diamond-backed rattlesnake
  • Cathy Illg, Lakewood, Colo.: Harris’ antelope squirrel
  • Shirley Ramaley, Sun City: cactus wren
  • J.P. Bruce, Tucson: redhead
  • Michael Burm, Mesa: bighorn sheep
  • Pia Wyer, Payson: great horned owl
  • Ron Watkins, New River: chub
  • Ted Hendy, Sierra Vista: wild turkey
  • William Wells, Surprise: Eastern collared lizard

Due to the talent of Arizona’s wildlife photographers, our judges have a tough time choosing the best of the best every year. So this year, we chose 54 honorable mention images as well. Their photographs are featured in an online slide show on the photo contest’s Web page, www.azgfd.gov/photocontest.

In addition to the winning artwork, the 2010 Arizona Wildlife Calendar provides handy reminders of important dates in a convenient wall-hanging format. Calendars go on sale Nov. 2 at all offices of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. People also may download an order form from www.azgfd.gov/photocontest, print it out, and mail it to the department. The calendar is available for $3 (while supplies last).
