It looks like one of those perchbass that you see in the Amazon.

Red Bellied Sunfish

Pretty enough to be a tank fish but I am pretty sure that is a Red Bellied Sunfish. Definitely isn't an oscar or a firemouth ciclid.

What type of fish...

I dont think its either of those fish's, Perch Bass,Firemouth Cichlid or Red Bellied Sunfish, I look them up and they look nothing like this fish, It might very well be a hybrid who knows, hopefully someone on here can comment on what type of fish it truly is...

okay...

It is most likely in the genus Thorichthys- maybeee Andinoacara... please note shape- coloration has no role in fish identification. all the pictures on the internet are of aquarium kept fish, which naturally look much more glorious than fish in the wild. now, if you disagree with that you could argue that i could be a hybrid between south american cichlids (firemouth x aureum would be a good guess). I'm a very experienced south american cichlid keeper. This fish is a south american cichlid for sure- most likely female (sex is based on the fins) probably set free by its owner, probably out of good intentions, but it is terrible for the ecosystem.

Tilapia is my guess.

That's a Tilapia. All be it colorful for a Tilapia, I'm pretty sure it's a Tilapia.

All the Cichlids that people have mentioned are good guesses, but I don't believe they are any of those fishes mentioned.

It's actually too hot AND to cold for most of those Cichlid fishes to survive here in the Desert Southwest.

On the surface it's too hot in the summer, too cold down deep, and far too cold in the winter all together.

Sure, they would survive for a while this time of year in a pond situation. I've caught Oscars here, but they would have a though time of it. Especially in a canal where the water run colder.

Tilapia zilli

I have done to years of research on the lower salt riverine system, and I have found plenty of invasive or exotic fish. This one is a red bellied tilapia (Tilapia zilli) juvenile. They are very agressive and territorial from what I've seen. You can go up on the USGS website and look it up.
